Die von Yuma Shinohara kuratierte Ausstellung Make Do With Now stellt eine junge, bislang wenig bekannte Generation von Architekt:innen in Japan vor, deren Arbeiten die aktuelle Architektur der Region vorantreiben. Vorgestellt werden fünf aufstrebende Architekturbüros, deren kreativer Umgang mit begrenzten Ressourcen, vorgefundenem Material und bestehender Bausubstanz auf die drängenden Fragen unserer Zeit reagiert.
‹Make Do With Now› beleuchtet eine neue Generation von Architekt:innen und urbanen Akteur:innen in Japan, die grösstenteils nach dem Tohoku-Erdbeben und der Nuklearkatastrophe von Fukushima 2011 ins Berufsleben einstieg. Diese Generation entwickelt eine Reihe kritischer, ökologischer und sozialer Ansätze, die sich mit begrenzten Ressourcen, vorhandenen Materialien und vorgefundenen Räumen kreativ ‹behelfen› und gleichzeitig nach angemessenen Antworten auf die dringenden Herausforderungen der Gegenwart suchen. In Abkehr vom traditionellen Bild als Autor:innen artikulieren diese Architekt:innen eine neue Handlungsfähigkeit: Sie arbeiten von der Peripherie aus, nutzen Lücken im System und nehmen neue Rollen im Prozess ein, die bisher ignoriert wurden.
Yuma Shinohara ist Kurator am S AM Schweizerisches Architekturmuseum in Basel. Zuvor hatte er verschiedene kuratorische und redaktionelle Positionen bei Storefront for Art and Architecture, Ruby Press, der Akademie der Künste Berlin sowie dem Canadian Centre for Architecture inne. Am S AM hat Shinohara die Ausstellungen «Was War Werden Könnte» (2025) und «Make Do With Now» (2022) kuratiert und die Ausstellungen «SAY Swiss Architecture Yearbook» (2023), «Beton» (2021) und «Swim City» (2019) ko-kuratiert. Er hat vergleichende Literaturwissenschaft und Kulturwissenschaft an der Columbia University in New York studiert.

Make Do With Now: New Directions in Japanese Architecture
The exhibition Make Do With Now, curated by Yuma Shinohara, introduces a young, little-known generation of architects in Japan whose work is progressing the region's architecture today. It presents five emerging architectural practices whose creative use of limited resources, found materials and existing buildings responds to the pressing issues of our time.
„Make Do With Now’ sheds light on an emerging generation of architects and urban practitioners in Japan. Largely entering professional practice following the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and Fukushima nuclear disaster, this generation is developing a range of critical, ecological, and social approaches that creatively ‘make do“ – with limited resources, found materials, and existing spaces – while seeking appropriate responses to the urgent problems of the present. Turning their backs on the traditional image of the architect-author, these practitioners are articulating a new architectural agency in working from the periphery, exploiting gaps in the system, and occupying new roles in the process that have previously been overlooked. 
Yuma Shinohara is a curator at the S AM Swiss Architecture Museum. Before joining the S AM, he held editorial and curatorial positions at Storefront for Art and Architecture, Ruby Press, the Academy of Arts Berlin, and the Canadian Centre for Architecture. At the S AM, Shinohara has curated the exhibitions What Was Could Be (2025) and Make Do With Now (2022) and co-curated the exhibitions SAY Swiss Architecture Yearbook (2023), Beton (2021), and Swim City (2019). He graduated in comparative literature and society from Columbia University in New York.
